Gardnerville, Nevada was established in 1879, it was the that Lawrence Gillman purchase the Kent House located in nearby Genoa and had it moved to seven acres on the east fork of the Carson River. Located near what is today the J.T. Basque Bar and Dining Room, the Kent house was converted to a hotel. The hotel soon became the center of the Gardnerville community and was named after Gilman's friend John Gardner.

Minden and Gardnerville Nevada still maintain the small town charm of the past with small Mom and Pop stores and restaurants scattered along the highway 50 corridor that runs through both towns. In fact some of the original buildings still remain intact such as the old Carson Valley Mercantile which has been converted into the aptly fitting, Cheshire Antiques  store.

The Local museum provides a look back into some of the original founding family's lives and is a great place to visit to gain further insight into the past of this once small hay and grain producing community.
